“What is WHCS, and what are the basic requirements?”

WHCS is a free after-school music program based at Holyrood Church on 179th St. and Fort Washington Avenue. Our program runs five days a week, from 3:30pm-6pm, and we offer instruction mainly in vocal, but also in instrumental music, and provide frequent performance opportunities. We build in at least one hour of homework assistance each program day, and snacks are provided. The program begins in September and ends in June, closely following the NYC Department of Education’s calendar.

We require that new students attend at least three days a week, though we prefer attendance all five days. It's important to reiterate that our program is primarily a vocal music program, so students will spend most of their time developing music skills.

“Who can attend WHCS?”

Our program is open to all students in grades 1 - 5, but we ask that they come in for a music placement evaluation to assess whether or not the program is a good fit. Elements assessed include basic rhythm patterns, ability to hear pitch and simple pitch patterns, and ability to take direction (no fancy prepared arias required!). When making our decision, we take maturity (particularly for younger students), ability to focus, and natural musical ability under serious consideration.

“How do I sign my child up for an evaluation?”

Evaluations are held at the beginning of each semester. If you have more than one child who is interested in attending, make sure you register each child separately.
