Ensemble singing is the cornerstone of WHCS’ curriculum and at the heart of its mission. Choral activities take place every day.
INSTRUMENTAL EDUCATION — S’Cool Sounds
Our students work with a dedicated instructor to receive top-notch recorder and percussion instruction. S’cool Sounds, a program that serves thousands of students in the USA and abroad, aims to lift spirits and change lives through the transformative power of music.
MUSICAL EXPLORATION
WHCS students strengthen their music literacy skills while cultivating an informed appreciation for all kinds of music and broadening their understanding of the world.
VOICE INSTRUCTION
Voice instruction strengthens and supports the ensemble sound by empowering singers to explore and develop their natural gifts. Private lessons are offered to all students, ensuring each individual receives information tailored to their special abilities and needs.
PIANO INSTRUCTION
Students receive one-on-one instruction, helping to strengthen their music skills and gain fluency on the piano. Every semester, students have the opportunity to perform in a a piano recital and demonstrate their skills, knowledge, and musicality. Piano instruction is available to students who have demonstrated a commitment to WHCS’ core program of vocal ensemble music.
HOMEWORK, CRAFTS, COMMUNITY BUILDING
The Washington Heights Choir School works to foster kindness, respect, and responsibility in its students by providing at least an hour each day for homework, including assistance from a seasoned education professional. We also make sure children have time to play and create together in an inclusive and positive environment, because developing minds need down-time as much as they need structured activities.
